This was to be first holiday event for The Ramblers and also a first big event for Malahide Rugby Football Club motorhome park and let me tell you it was an outstanding success for both of us. First impressions are always best and that proved to be very true on this occasion as on our arrival on Wednesday in the beautiful sunshine the first taste of our holiday was the stunning view over the Broad-meadow Estuary. Our space was on the practice ground giving us loads of room on good level pitches on short bone-dry grass. Flo and Bridget took care of entries whilst Enda, David, Joe and Gary had the simple task of parking. The now familiar form of the holiday gazebo was soon erected to provide shelter for chit chat and to sort the world’s problems. The Rugby Club provided us with a lovely comfortable function room complete with bar, and might I add, Gary the bar manager, who attended to our every need during our stay.
On this night, Wednesday, we had bingo and once again Florence Little called the numbers with that soft but very clear voice. Some music followed and Gary the bar manager learned the first lesson of the day, that he needed extra bar staff for the rest of our stay.
Thursday was a bit wet and windy in the morning but it did clear up around lunch time giving those who didn't make their way into Malahide a chance to practise boules/bowls or horseshoe pitching. In the evening Gary Little compered a table top quiz which was certainly not easy. Or maybe it was just me found it difficult.
Friday was another beautiful day with most going to Malahide, Dublin with its horse show or even some to Dun Laoghaire. Well, the bus and train passes do work, if in a pretty unconventional way, as I don't think their on-board computers were geared for our Northern passes, so they simply just waved us on. Disco Joe provided the music and had the floor filled with dancers. Another tip top night was had by all.
Another great day on Saturday and again boules etc on the green, walks through adjoining Malahide Park or along the estuary path where Mrs Heron seemed intent on keeping a keen eye on all of us. Gary Little captured her (or him) on camera on numerous occasions as can be seen in Gallery amongst the numerous photographs taken by Gary I must add the photos were of such quality I would not be surprised if Failte Ireland employed his services. His photographs are beautiful and will always serve as a reminder of our visit. Saturday night was lovely, quiet with some music, a lot of chat, a few drinks The extra bar staff again working hard but just great.
Sunday morning and time to go, pack up and over to the hall for the coffee morning. The catering team led by Jack and Florence again pulled out all stops and done us proud. Our Vice Chairman Joe Little addressed the floor and thanked all those who made this event a resounding success. Hope to see you all at Newtownards 6th September.
